dual-core madness...

It's the dawn of the new computer season... with PCI-express, dual-channel memory, and dual-core systems...
Now, I've seen some P4's doing the dual-core thing and registering in our happy ctrl-alt-delete task manager as having effectively 2 processors...
The question now -- would that be the same effect for the dual-core Athlon 64 X2's? And if so... Does it need to have a motherboard specifically designed (or updated with a bios) to support taking advantage of both those cores?
It's been a long summer, with information difficult to find about these things. I'm starting to think about building a microATX system that I could easily carry around, so suggestions on motherboards would be good too. Of course, I would like dual-core or dual-processors, and dual-channel memory.
Maybe I should look into P4 systems instead...? At one point, it seemed cheaper to get a dual-xeon system rather than a dual-core Athlon.

*lost and confused in the sea of madness that is duality*
(ooo... it's getting related to the class...)

to answer stuff... i've been talking about computer processors.

dual-core is the latest cool thing... as opposed to single-core which has been around for ages... if 1 processor is good... 2 is even better! (in highly simplified form)

but... prices are still in the 350$+ range for dual-core processors.

what does this have to do with the class? chris asked me about the post... more power in x space for y cost and z time with a total mass of d? everything has to with everything! ><
